It is with great sadness that Leigh R.U.F.C. have to announce the sudden death of Joe McDonough on 15th April 2009.
“Joe Mac” as he was known to all started playing for the club in 1955, his playing career was cut short by injury which lead him to focus on the coaching and administration of Colts Rugby.
As well as Club Colts Rugby with Leigh he was also heavily involved with County Rugby, attending the inaugural meeting of the County Colts committee in 1972.
With Lancashire RFU Colts Joe was involved in 3 consecutive County Cup Finals at Twickenham and toured Ireland and Canada.
It was with such high regard that he was held that in 1997 the Lancashire Cup for Under 17’s was formed as the Joseph McDonough Cup.
Joe was also a recipient of the Senior County Honours Tie, one of the highest awards Lancashire RFU bestow.
Joe will be sadly missed by all in both town and county involved in rugby.
Our thoughts go to his family at this sad time.
The funeral will be held on Friday 24th April at Sacred Heart Church. Joe will be leaving his house at 12.30 pm, the service will be at 1.00 pm with refreshments afterwards at Leigh RUFC.
